WordPress is the world’s most popular tool for creating websites. WordPress is capable of creating any style of the website, from a simple blog to a full-featured business website. You can even use WordPress to create an online store.
First released in 2003 by founders Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, WordPress has gone on to become the most popular blogging system on the web, boasting over 60 million websites. There are thousands of templates, called “Themes,” offered, both for free and for purchase, that allow you to customize your site design and functionality. These themes, as well as a large selection of plugins.
WordPress started as just a blogging system, but has evolved to be used as a full content management system and so much more through the thousands of plugins and widgets and themes, WordPress is limited only by your imagination.
Joomla is an open source content management system that allows you to build websites and powerful online applications. This award-winning website software contains easy-to-use features and it is freely available to everyone. Joomla is written in PHP for managing content on the web and uses a MySQL database to store content. Joomla is released under the GNU General Public License.
Joomla’s primary focus has been on usability and extensibility since its initial release in 2005. It is because of this that the project has been the recipient of numerous awards, including being a three-time recipient of the packet Open Source Content Management System Award.
Joomla is absolutely free. 100% free to use, regardless of your implementation. This is due, in part, to its non-corporate roots and volunteer-driven support structure. There are few bills the Joomla project needs to pay to keep up and running, and everyone that contributes to its development does so out of a passion for creating something that truly meets the needs of sites both large and small.
